There are nine fully operational laboratories in the Civil Engineering Department. Practical work performed in these laboratories has been carefully designed to fulfill the academic requirements as well as the present day industry needs to prepare Civil Engineers with high professional caliber and better job prospects.
A brief description of these experiments is as under:
| 1. Highways Transporation Engineering Laboratory |
Tests for characterization of road building material like:
Skid Resistance Test of Road Pavements, Specific Gravity and Water Absorption of road aggregates, Loss Angeles Abrasion Test, Laboratory CBR, Softening Point of Asphalt by Ring & Ball Apparatus, etc & different types of traffic surveys like mid-block classified vehiculer counts, intersection counts, signal delay studies, etc. |
|
2. Soil Mechanics Laboratory |
Study of engineering properties os soil including:
Soil Classification, Sieve Analysis, Atterberg Limits, Laboratory CBR, Standard Compaction Test, Shear Strength Test, etc. |
|
3. Surveying Laboratory |
Introduction to field survey work, Chain Surveys, Plain Table Surveys, Open & Closed Traverse Surveys, Handling of Theodolite, Use of Total Station Equipment, Layout of Simple and Transition Curves, Profile Levelling, Contouring & Building Layouts, etc. |
|
| 4. Computer-Aided Design Laboratory |
Preperation of engineering drawings using Autocad Software, Analysis & Design of Structures using computer software like STAAD, Geometric & Pavement Design of Roads using Computers, and other computer-aided design applications like Water-cad, for water supply & sewerage works. |
| |
| 5. Water Supply and Sanitary Engineering Laboratory |
Tests on the quality of water supply and character of sewage including pH value water, total hardness, alkalinity, calcium hardness, suspended solids, settleable solids, conductivity of water, etc. |
| |
| 6. Plain & Reinforced Concrete Laboratory |
| Concrete mix design, tests on physical properties of cement & concrete, grading of aggregates, tests of flexural strength of concrete specimens, etc. |
| |
| 7. Strength of Materials Laboratory |
Study of structural behaviour of different types of material and structural systems, use of Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is also demonstrated. |
| |
| 8. Hydraulic & Fluid Mechanics Laboratory |
| Study of flow characteristics through different types of notches, study of centrifugal pumps & their componenets, study of different parts of hydraulic and measurement of discharge, etc. |
| |
| 9. Geology Laboratory |
Study of different geological maps and their interpretation and study of different types of rocks and their properties, etc. |
