Examination and Performance Evaluation

Students will be continuously assessed through class tests, assignments, laboratory and project work. For each subject there will an end of semester examination with a weightage of 50%.

Following scheme is proposed:

Letter grades of I,S,U and W are not used in calculating a student's GPA.


Improvement of Courses Grade

A student who secures a letter grade of "C" may repeat the course. The credit points earned will, however, be credited once only, being the higher of the two.


Failures and Re-examinations

A student securing a grade of "F" in any course may repeat that course, the credit points earned will, however, be credited one only, being the higher of the two. A course with a grade of "F" will not count towards fulfilling the coursework requirement for the degree.

Dropping a Course

A student may submit an application with the recommendation of the Chairman of the Department to the Dean of the Faculty concerned to drop any course at any time before the semester examination. If a course is dropped with in the first two weeks then the student is entitled to 80% refund of the fees and the course will not appear on student's academic record. However, if a course is dropped after that period then the student is not entitled to any refund and a letter grade of "W" will appear in student's academic record against that course.

A course, which is dropped, will not count towards fulfilling the course work requirements for the degree. The student will be charged full fees for the course to be taken in lieu of the dropped course.

Thesis

To obtain the MS degree a Thesis is required. The Board of Advanced Studies and Research on recommendation of the Chairman of the Department will appoint an Advisor help the student. The student will choose a suitable topic with the approval of his/her Advisor who will guide, advise and monitor his/her progress and suggest reading material. MS Thesis Proposal along with literature survey and research methodology according to prescribed format will be communicated to the Board of advanced Studies and Research for approval. No thesis will be considered satisfactory unless it shows a capacity to apply scientific principles and a presentation of ideas in logical fashion. The thesis will be written in English language according to the prescribed format and will be submitted in five suitably bound copies.

Evaluation of the Thesis

The BASR, on the recommendation of the Chairman of the Department concerned, will appoint a Thesis Evaluation Committee (TEC) consisting of the Advisor and two other members who are well-qualifies experts of the subject from outside the University for the evaluation of the thesis. One of the two outside members shall be appointed as Chairman of the committee. The three members should send to the BASR their evaluation of the thesis. The thesis will be graded on a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) or Incomplete (I) basis.

If all the three members accept the thesis as good research work then the BASR will give permission to hold a Thesis Defence under the same committee. During the Thesis Defence the committee will subject the student to a viva voce test on his/her thesis. After a successful defence the thesis will be graded as "S" and TEC will recommend the student to the BASR for the award of MS degree, provided all other requirements have been fulfilled. In case on an unsuccessful defence the Thesis is awarded the grade of "U" and the BASR is advised to drop the student from the MS Programme.

If the committee members agree that the thesis is good but has some shortcomings then thesis is graded as "I" and the BASR will ask the candidate to work more on the thesis and submit it again within a period of at most three months. On resubmission on the thesis will be reevaluated as described in (1). If the TEC is not satisfied with the resubmitted thesis then the thesis is rejected, the student is awarded a grade of "U" on the thesis and the BASR is advised to drop the student from the MS Programme.


Language of the Thesis and Examinations

The thesis should be written in English according to the format prescribed be the University. Any examination and/or viva voce shall be conducted in English.

Publication of the Thesis

The thesis will be the property of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology and the University will have the right to publish whole or part of the same in a technical journal with credit being given to the student and the Advisor. The University will have full authority to use some or all of the results obtained. The student may also do so with the approval of the University.
