Course Name: Applied Physics

Course Outline:

Review of vectors, Ordinary Differentiation of Vector, Gradient of Scalar field, Divergence and Curl of Vector Field. Properties of electric charge, conservation of charge, quantisation of charge, Coloumb’s law, electric field, field due to a point charge, infinite line of charge, ring of charge. Electric dipole and dipole moment, electric flux, Gauss’ laws and its applications. Electric potential, electrostatic potential of discrete and Continuous charges, potential difference, equipotential surfaces. Capacitors, capacitance with dielectric, energy stored in capacitors, energy density, electric current, Ohm’s law, resistivity and conductivity. Biot-Savart’s law, lines of magnetic field, two parallel conductors, Lorentz Force, Ampere’s Law, Magnetic Field due to current element (Circular Current Loop and Solenoid), Faraday’s law, Lenz’s law,  and Maxwell’s equations. Magnetic properties of matter: ferro, para and diamagnetism, Hall’s effect. Waves and oscillations, simple harmonic oscillators, theory of light, interference, conditions of interference, superposition of waves, Young’s double slit experiment, diffraction, Fraunhofer and Fresnel diffraction. Elasticity: factors affecting elasticity, stress, strain, stress-strain curve, Young’s modulus, Shear Modulus, Bulk Modulus, Poisson’s ratio, relationship between the constants of elasticity.
