“Everything begins with an idea”

This year’s Ideathon’22, held on 10th November, was a massive success. Aspiring startups with the best and brightest ideas competed in the competition in front of a prestigious panel of judges.

The event was hosted by ORIC to foster Entrepreneurship skills and enthusiasm among students.

ORIC organized Ideathon 2022, a startup competition that aims to foster the entrepreneurial spirit in students by giving them a channel to pitch and polish their ideas. The event was attended by leading experts from the academia and industry.

On Thursday, 10th November 2022, the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization – SSUET (ORIC) organized an Ideathon where fifteen groups with the most promising Final Year Project (FYPs) were provided with a platform to pitch their innovative start-up ideas, related to engineering and technological domains. The aim of the Ideathon was to provide students with the opportunity to have their start-ups incubated by the Sir Syed Technology Incubation Center (STIC) to accelerate entrepreneurship development and commercialization.

Attending the event, in addition to the judges and participants, was the event host, the ORIC team; Dr. Rabia Noor Enam (Director), Dr. Rukaiya (Manager Industrial Linkages), Huma Ahmed (Manager Research Operation & Administration), Mohammad Hasnain Raza (Manager BIC), Dr. Dur-e-Jabeen (Manager Research & Development),  and Engr. Rabia Siddiqui. The event was also graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. Vali Uddin (Vice Chancellor), Engr. The event commenced with a recitation of the Holy Quran followed by a short presentation by Event Organizer, Dr. Rukaiya, to state the mission and vision of the Ideathon as well as mention the previous winners and their start-ups. Event Moderator, Nameera Zafar, introduced and welcomed this year’s esteemed judges; Salman Ahmed Khan (Group Chief Information Officer at Jaffer Brothers Jaffer Business Systems Pvt. One by one, students from different departments came forward to pitch their business idea showcasing their presentation skills, creativity, and innovation through a wide range of ideas from fields related to medicine, smart energy, health, special education, machinery, and many more. At the end of each pitch, judges posed questions regarding the many aspects of the product/service. The judges also gave their very valuable insight and feedback to help and guide the students on how to present better and improve their business ideas. In addition, the judges gave students recommendations and references to similar successful businesses and offering to provide the students with relevant industry links.

As each group pitched its ideas, Judge Salman Ahmed Khan praised the talent and ambition of the students and their understanding of business and marketing. He also commented on how the ideas tackled issues closely related to everyday problems that a person faces. The judges recognized the potential for success in many of the pitches and encouraged the students to continue to pursue their projects with persistence and perseverance to gain continued success.

After the pitching session had reached its conclusion, the judges took some time to decide the winners. Before announcing the winning start-ups, Dr. Rabia Noor took to the podium to encourage the participants to take their projects further, to keep achieving new heights through hard work and enthusiasm, and to keep developing the entrepreneurship mindset. She also thanked the judges and invited them to give a final word to the participants. The judges commented how they were amazed at the unique, interesting, and wide variety of ideas that addressed relatable issues maturely and innovatively. They also asked the participants to not be disheartened and to continue to advance in their budding entrepreneurship careers despite any hardships they might endure. Participants were advised to continue to grow and develop their products and skills with full commitment and motivation to reach next-level achievements. Judge Rozina Imtiaz also commented on the importance of good presentation skills to impress investors as well as having a skilled, hard-working team.
