Dr Selvakumar Ramachandran is an esteemed figure in the realms of computer science, virtual reality (VR), AI, and accessible technologies, with a profound commitment to using technological advancements to empower humanity and promote inclusion. As the co-founder of UK-based Kerckhoffs Ltd and Eyemmersive Inc. (USA), Dr Ramachandran has distinguished himself as an information interrogator and an advocate for knowledge pay-forward, embodying the principle that technology should serve to break down barriers and foster a more inclusive society.
Born in India and faced with the challenges of person with disabilities from an early age, Dr Ramachandran’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. His academic pursuits led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical & Electronics Engineering from Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, where he was recognized for his leadership and community service. Dr Ramachandran’s career began in the field of software engineering, where he not only excelled but also initiated a pioneering training program for individuals with disabilities, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to inclusivity.
Dr Ramachandran’s quest for knowledge took him to Sweden, where he completed his MSc in Software Engineering at Blekinge Tekniska Högskola. He then pursued a PhD in Information Science at the University of Rome – Tor Vergata, Italy, where he was awarded for his contributions to the field, including recognition as a recipient of the Google Europe Scholar Award for Students with Disabilities.
At Kerckhoffs Ltd (UK) Dr Ramachandran leads the innovative project Eyemmersive®, aiming to revolutionize the tourism industry through VR technology, making travel experiences accessible to all, especially people with disabilities. His work extends to the DIVETOUR project with European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT), funded by the Erasmus+ program, focusing on developing methodologies for accessible tourism.
In his role at the University of Oxford’s Department of Continuing Education, Dr Selvakumar Ramachandran leverages his extensive experience in software engineering, data science, and AI to tutor and inspire students.
Dr Ramachandran is a respected member of the British Computer Society (BCS) and a Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). His research on VR-based applications emphasizes the importance of accessibility and inclusion, earning funding and accolades from the European Commission and other organizations.
At Syed University of Engineering & Technology as an adjunct professor, Dr Ramachandran brings his wealth of experience, innovative spirit, and advocacy for inclusivity to inspire the next generation of engineers and technologists.
